Uploading Gallery Photos

The gallery wizard includes a photo uploader which allows you to upload up to 100 photos in one batch.

Step 1 Resize & Prepare your Photos

RESIZE YOUR PHOTOS BEFORE UPLOADING

resize firstAlways resize your photos before uploading. This substantially reduces the uploading time as well as the image display time, so your galleries will load much faster.

The optimum size for thumbnail galleries is 800 pixels on the longest side. However, if you intend to display photos in the Full Screen Gallery display (which expands your photos to the full size of the browser window), then your photos should be resized to circa 1200 pixels wide (for landscape format) and 900 pixels high (portrait format). This will prevent your photos from appearing pixelated when viewed on larger monitors.

Image resolution should be either 72 or 96 ppi.
This is done for you automatically in PhotoShop if you use the File / Save for Web facility.

JPEG compression quality should be set to 70% for optimum quality and image file size.

IMAGE FILE NAMES & DISPLAY SEQUENCE

It is always recommended to rename your images before uploading so that they will display in the correct sequence. Websites list files in alpha order, so file names should include numbers that are padded with zeros (eg: abc_001.jpg, abc_023.jpg etc)

Renaming photos makes it easier for you to find images when visitors give you a file name as a reference.

Also, if your photos are of specific scenes or subjects, then use descriptive file names so that they will be found by Google Image Searches.

File names should ONLY USE ALPHANUMERIC characters  (letters and numbers) and hyphens and underscores. Never use spaces or punctuation in file names.

You can download free batch resizing and renaming software from Irfanview and FastStone Photo Resizer.

Step 2 Batch Upload & Process

If you want to auto-apply a professional watermark to each photo that you upload then switch this feature on first in the Gallery Settings.

We can create a bespoke watermark graphic with your name free of charge on request. The default watermark graphic is a large translucent copyright symbol.

Once the photos have uploaded return to the wizard main menu where you will see the status notice and a large yellow button promting you to process the images. You can also opt to have all the thumbnails cropped square. This is ideal if you wish to have your galleries display thumbnails in neat columns and rows. Press the process images button and wait while the thumbnails are generated.

Step 3 Store & Display

Once the thumbnails have been generated you will then be presented with the options to store and display your photos.

Images are stored on your website in folders just like you do on your computer, so you need to tell your website which folders to store them in. You can select an existing storage folder or create a new one. If you want to create a sub-folder, select an existing folder as the parent and then enter a name for the new folder.

Photos are displayed in Galleries, so you can select an existing Gallery to display them in, or create a new Gallery for them.

Galleries are displayed in Portfolios, so select an existing Portfolio for your new Gallery, or you can create a new Portfolio in the next stage.

Store and display uploaded images

job doneIf you have selected a Gallery and a Portfolio in the options above, and your Portfolio has already been added to a web page, then your photos will instantly appear on that page, and you don't need to do anything else. You can just upload another batch of photos into the same Gallery if there are more to add.

Optional Steps

The following steps will be required if you created a new Gallery or if you did not select a Gallery or Portfolio in Step 3 above.

Gallery Manager

Once you press Save, you will be taken to the Gallery manager.

If you have not selected a Portfolio for your Gallery then the wizard will prompt you to select one.

Always follow the wizard prompts which are at the top of the page highlighted in green. This will ensure that you have completed all the required steps to display your galleries on your website.

create a pageIf you have not yet created a page to display your portfolio of galleries then you need to do this now (via the main admin Pages tab) before following the prompt. Once you have created the page then you can add the new portfolio to it, either by returning to the Gallery Manager or the Portfolio Manager (in the wizard main menu).

Selecting a Web Page

All of your current web pages are listed in the select box. Those web pages that already have a Portfolio will be highlighted in red. You can only display ONE portfolio per page, so select a page in black. If you have just created a new page then you will see it listed as in this example.

Portfolio is Live on Web Page

Once you have selected a web page to display your portfolio (and all its galleries) it will then be live on your website. The gallery manager now shows the pages where the portfolio is live.
